Betäckningssäsongen än så länge

Ingen betäckningssäsong har varit sig lik och årets verkar ha en egenhet – allt på en gång.  Oftast får jag en eller ett par förfrågningar i början av året och första åren ville ”alla” betäcka i maj. I år kom en förfrågan tidigt på säsongen och bokningen blev början av maj. Nära inpå tänkt ankomst kom personliga skäl mellan och vi fick skjuta upp det hela på oviss tid. Ingen fara då det var helt stiltje i övrigt, men så började det…  En ägare hörde av sig angående ett sto med föl och vi bokade ankomst ett par veckor senare. Strax efteråt ringde det och stoet ankom inom kort, nu var det början av juni. . Jag hann precis få tre av mina egna betäckta innan. Hon kom i brunst ganska snabbt, men ska vara kvar till första ultraljudet är gjort.

Nästa sto med föl vid sidan ankom före midsommar och kom direkt i brunst. Men Pepper verkade inte så intresserad när jag såg dem, trots att hon ställde upp sig hela tiden. Och så kom vi inte iväg till Danmark och kvar blev det andra rockystoet.  Hon visade sig vara i brunst direkt och mindre än en kvart efter att jag släppt ihop henne och Pepper skedde första betäckningen – ofta tar det någon dag i alla fall. Två brunstiga ston, det har vi haft förut. Det är ofta det jag föredrar eftersom man ofta får se betäckning när man flyttar hingsten mellan stona. Vilket jag brukar göra en eller två gånger per dag.

När jag red ut Whizzy fick jag en känsla av att hon nog ändå var på gång in i brunst så jag tänkte att jag skulle släppa henne med Pepper en stund påföljande dag. Hon  skulle kunna bli lite tuff att betäcka tänkte jag. Whizzy grinade när de släpptes ihop och sparkade precis som jag trott. Men oj vad hon brunstade! Det hade inte synts alls innan… För att släppa ihop dem fick jag temporärt bygga en extra hage och så fick hon stå med honom några timmar på eftermiddagen. Eftersom Pepper redan hade två utomstående ston flyttade jag honom morgon och kväll mellan damerna och plötsligt, när vi planerat för hemgång började eftersom intresset från båda verkade börja dala så började han betäcka stoet med föl vid sidan så jag såg det.

Samma rutin nästa dag för Whizzy. Då han jag bara gå för att fixa med andra hästar så ser jag Whizzy betäckas bakom buskarna. Så, hon var tydligen inte så svår trots allt.

Pepper verkar lite trött med tre damer som betäcks samtidigt (så Whizzy får nog bli varannan dag). Dessutom ska stoet som bokade först äntligen komma häråt – kanske redan i helgen och så har jag ytterligare ett sto på ingång… Nu hoppas jag bara att alla ston tar sig så det inte blir massor med ombetäckningar också… Just nu gör jag inte mycket annat än att flytta ston mellan hagar. Stoet som skulle stanna till ultraljud går hemma med tant Calinka eftersom hagarna på sommarbetet inte räcker till alla dessa hästar. Särskilt inte som bevattningen av åkrarna är igång och ena hagen då helst bör stå öppen eftersom pappa passerar flera gånger per dag med traktor.

Det är jättekul att det blivit så många ston, det verkar som om det blir ett sto mer än förra säsongen som hittills är säsongen med flest ston. MEN – varför behövde alla komma inom loppet av en månad? 

No breeding season is like any other and this year does it seem to be everything at the same time. Often do I get one or two questions about breeding early in the year, and the month that has been most popular to book has been May. This year did I get one early request and we booked that to beginning of May. Close to arrival did the mare-owner got some personal things she had to deal with and had to paus the arrival. No problem for me as no one else was asking for peppers service.  But then… A mare owner got in contact with a mare and foal and booked arrival a few weeks later. In the meantime a second mare owner called and arrived just days afterward.  This was beginning of June. I just managed to get three of my own mare bred by Pepper before her arrival. She got quickly in heat, but is going to be here until confirmed in foal.

The mare with foal at foot arrived just before Midsummer and got in heat instantly. But Pepper didn’t seem so interested, even if she tried to get him into it. Few days later we never made the trip to Denmark and one more mare was added. It turned out  that she was very much in heat and after I got them together did it take less than 15 minutes before the first breeding. Usually it take at least a day. Ok, two mares in heat, but that works well, maybe even the best. Then I move Pepper between the mares once or twice a day. That way you often get to see the breedings, with only one mare can they “hide” and only graze when I pass by.

When I trailrode Whizzy did I get a feeling that something was going on. She might be on her way to heat. As I suspected that she might take some time to accept the stallion and idea of breeding did I put the two of them in a pasture for the afternoon the following day. And boy, she was in heat! Kicking Pepper exactly as I had suspected, but also time to get them together. Hadn’t seen a thing before, just the feeling that she wasn’t as usual. As Pepper already had two other mares in one pasture each did I have to fix a new pasture just for the short meeting.

Following morning did I see a breeding with pepper and the mare with a foal by the side for the first time. He probably had knew that she wasn’t ready before. I had started to suspect that she was ready as the mare didn’t seem so keen on it either any more and the owner and I had started to deiced when she was going home. Same routine with Whizzy in the afternoon. When I went away top look at the other horse did I see behind the trees that he seemed to be breeding her… Apparently not that hard to get as I thought.

Pepper seemed a bit tired this morning as he now have three mares in heat at the same time. (So I think he only meet Whizzy every second day from now on). And, good news – the mare that booked early in May is coming here – maybe even this weekend. And there is another mare on her way to very soon… I just hope the mares conceive easily and not have to come back. Right now it seems as the only thing I do is moving horses from one pasture to another. I even had to bring the mare that arrived first back home with Calinka as there was no more space for them in the Summer pastures. (But they can graze there to, so no harm done). Especially not since the irrigation system for the fields has begun to be used and that makes my father pass by one of the pastures with tractor several times every day and wants the gates to be open.

It is so nice that it seems to be this many mares – but I had preferred if not all of the them had appeared within the same month.
