Under ett besök fick jag frågan hur Pepper är med ston. Så här i efterhand, när jag tänkt lite på det kan jag nog beskriva det bättre.

Ofta börjar han med att visa upp sig lite, svävar i traven , kröker nacken, gnäggar. Låter jag sto och hingst gå på var sida staketet så är det snabbt lugnt. De tittar lite, men snart står troligen Pepper och betar – även om han finns i närheten och spanar lite.

När läget känns avspänt, stoet har hunnit se sig omkring och jag släpper ihop sto och hingst blir det ofta ett par varv i galopp, lite skrik, några frambensslag och kanske någon bakutspark. Men, Maria som vill fotografera brukar gnälla över att det är för lungt – hon får inte tillräckligt med tillfällen att få tjusiga bilder, de lugnar ofta ner sig för fort. Sedan kommer det att pippas, slås med bak eller framben, tas ett varv eller så lite då och då. Men inte massor.

Stona som har kommit har sällan varit i brunst – ägarna har åkt ett par dagar innan de förväntat sig brunst. Därmed har jag inte heller sett betäckning under första dagen. Utan de går där, är lite nyfikna, kollar in varandra lite. Men, mer än så är det inte. Det är också därför jag låter Pepper gå med stona – han tar det lugnt. Låter dem landa på nya stället och uppvaktar dem lite. Märker han senare att stoet verklingen är högbrunstig men ändå inte riktigt “släpper till” kan han säga till lite, jaga henne om så behövs. Men, då kan de ha gått tillsammans en vecka. Och hanlyssnar fortfarande om de säger från.

How Pepper behaves with mares

During a visit I got the question how Pepper behave with mares. I started to think about it a little more after visitors had left.

Often he starts with showing of, trot with high lift, bend the neck, neigh. If I have mare and stallion with a fence between it cools down fast. They look at each other but soon Pepper go and eat some grass. Even if he still is close by and keep an eye on the new lady.

When they feel a little more relaxed, the mare has looked around and I let the mare and stallion meet they often take of for a lap or two in canter, they scream a little, kick a little with front or hind legs. But, as Maria has complained about several times when she has tried to get nice photos – they calm down quickly. She don’t get many chances to get nice photos with some action. They still go back to scream now and they, canter a little, maybe kick, but it just for short times.

The mares that have arrived have rarely been in heat – the owners have arrived a few days before the day they think they will get in heat.Therefore there is no breeding during the first day. They are a little curious of each other, look at each other, but that is it.That is also why I keep Pepper with the mares. He gives them time to check the new place out. But, when he noticed later on that the mare is very much in heat but still don’t stand still for mounting he can push her. He has been hunting mares if he feels that is needed. But then the mare might have been with him for a week or more. And he still listens to the mares.

Pepper and the first mare of 2017  on their second date. They did only run like this for a few laps, then slowed donw, maybe ran a  lap more after some time and then another one but mostly they did no nothing.
