Tömköring och hälta

För några dagar sedan undrade min tränare om jag inte skulle tömköra istället för att rida eftersom det nu alltid var något som bråkade när jag skulle upp på ryggen. Jag hade tänkt tanken, men utan instängslad ridbana och med en häst som troligen aldrig varit med om proceduren kändes det ändå tveksamt att ge sig på i mörkret. Jag har respekt för tömmar – även om jag verkligen gillar att tömköra.

Men, igår provade jag tömkörning! Det börjar kännas som om Pepper verkligen behöver jobba och att han blir less på den disciplinträning vi hållit på med. Det blir väldigt lite positivtränining med beröm – nästan bara korrigering. Trots allt vill jag att han ska tycka att det är kul att jobba med mig. Så, när Mariah kunde följa med tog vi pannlampan och gav oss iväg till en hage ett par hundar meter bort. (Därav blev det inga bilder – det får duga med en från i somras när Mariah tömkörde Calinka) Pepper var kanon på promenaden till hagen – disciplinträningen verkade ha gjort nytta! Väl där fick Mariah gå före med honom i grimskaft och så började jag försiktigt ta kommandot via tömmarna. I det stora hela skötte han sig ypperligt – och så snygg han var! Både Mariah och jag fick en intensiv längtan efter att rida honom…

Efter en liten stund släppte Mariah loss honom – precis när hon skulle göra det kom en stor timmerbil med släp på den lilla vägen 10 meter bort. I full fart. Pepper stod still. Väl loss jobbade vi vidare. Det blev bara träning i att kommunicera – han tycker det är lite konstigt att gå framåt, är inte riktigt med på mina smackningar. I USA “pussade” man ofta mer fram dem. Dessutom bröajde han backa några gånger och kom i fel position till mig och tömmarna. Men, han reagerade minimalt på tömmarn, är jättemjuk i munnen och tuggade fint på bettet. Däremot måste vi jobba mer på formen – han höjer huvudet för mycket, får inte med ryggen och vågar inte riktigt komma fram till bettet och ta stöd. Framåt – neråt kommer att behöva jobbas på istället för den höga “tävlingsform” han försökte sig på. Den orkar han inte genomföra ännu.

På väg mot stallet ledde Mariah Pepper – tidigare har han varit väldigt snäll då. Men inte nu – han gick hela tiden in i Mariahs privata sfär och respekterade inte henne helt. Precis som han gjort med mig tidigare. Det positiva är ändå att han skötte sig så bra med mig idag- bevisligen har träningen gjort nytta. Men, helt klart har han koll vem som håller i snöret.

Efter Pepper fick damerna komma in. Calinka var lite grinig – behövde uppmärksamhet och jobb trodde jag. Percy skötte sig utmärkt och lyfte alla fötterna bra – första gången jag gjort det sedan böjprovet. Hon är så söta den lilla flickan! Calinka skulle få flåsa lite, broddades och sadeln kom på. Att sitta upp på henne är som att sätta sig i en favoritfåtölj. Fin i uppvärmningen, men så fort vi började trava kändes hon halt. Och tyvärr verkade det inte vara den markering hon kan drabbas av som beror på att hon har vilat; den som släpper när man börjar jobba henne. Vi hittade inget som förklarade hältan, bara ett långsmalt sår på det drabbade benet. Kanske har hon slagit sig (det finns stenar och stockar så det räcker i hagen), kanske har hon sträckt sig. Igår var hon ok när Mariah jobade henne för hand, men nu får hon vila några dagar, en vecka så får vi se om det skett någon förändring.

Some days ago my trainer wonder if I shouldn’t ground drive instead of ride as it always seemd to be something in the way to get on Peppers back. I had thought about it previously, but working in the dark, without a fenced in arean and a horse that probably hadn’t the experiance of ground driving didn’t seem very tempting. I respect long reins – even if I really like ground driving.

But, today I tried to ground drive! It really feels as if Pepper need to work and that he is getting bored by the dicispline training that we have done so far. It becomes to less positive reinforcment and to much negative. I want him to enjoy working with me. So, as Mariah joined me to that stable we took the headlamp and headed of th a pasture a couple of hundred meters away. (That’s why there is no pictures – but I had one from this summer when Mariah is ground driving Calinka) Pepper followed me perfectly – the discipline trainge seemd to have worked! At the pasture Mariah took over the leadrope and I started slowly to show him the way with the reins. Over all he did great – and looked gorgeus. Both Mariah and I got an intstant ache to sit on his back.

After some time Mariah set him free – or as she was going to a big truck filled with timber drow by and the road just about 10 meters away. And he didn’t go slow. Pepper just flicked his ears. Without the lead rope Pepper continued to work well. We traing communication – he thought moving forward was a little bit strange, apparently I don’t give the right “american kissing sound”. Sometimes he got confused, backed a littel and got in a wrong position accoring to me and the reins, but we easilyb worked it out. He was really soft in the mouth and chewed nicely at the bit.But, we have to work more on collection – now he raises the head to mucj. The neck gets a nice arche, but he getts behind the bit, drops the back and don’t want to get support from the bit. We need to work round and low, not the high “competetion” posture that he now tries to do. He don’t have the muscles to support that frame jet.

Heading back to the stable Mariah took over the lead rope. usually Pepper is very gentle then. But not now – he constantly got into her personal space and didn’t really respecet her. The same as he did to me earlier. The positive thing is that he worked so well with me today – the training seems to have worked. But, apperently he really knows who is in holding the lead rope.

When Pepper was ready the ladies got their attention. Calinka was a little grumpy. I thoguth that she needed som attention and work. Percy behaved perfectly and even lifted all her feet well. Last time we lifted the feet was and the flexion test and she didn’t like that a lot… She is such a sweet girl! Calinka got spikes in her feet a saddle on her back and was schedule to canter a bit. To get in the saddle of Calinka is like getting back in a favorite chair, I just enjoyed the feeling. She felt fine while warming her upp in the arena but as soon as we left it and started to trot she was lame. And it didn’t seem to be the slight lameness that she can get when she hasen’t been worked proberly and that disapperas with work. We couldnät find anything that would explain the lameness, just a small wound ont he same limb. But no heat and no pain. Maybe she has hit herself, ther is a lot of small rocks and trees in the pasture, maybe she has slippered as she hasen’t had spikes and it has been a little icey lately. She was ok yesterday when Mariah worked her, but now she has to rest a couple of days, or a week and then we see if things has changed.
