Det bästa med att ha hingstar för betäckning är att man får träffa olika
hästraser och människor man inte fått träffa annars. Hittills har jag haft så
många trevliga kunder genom åren och det känns jättebra!

Eftersom de flesta föl som produceras från besökande ston blir korsningar
och rockyn är så ovanlig brukar jag fråga stoägarna vad de tänker sig få ut
från en eventuell avkomma. Svaren har varit många, och det finns inget rätt
eller fel, men jag tycker det är skönt att stämma av så att det verkar som om
stoägaren har en rimlig uppfattning om vad mina hingstar skulle kunna bidra med
till avkomma.  I några fall har vi också kommit fram till att det kanske
inte är rätt val – även om det ofta inte berott på att stoägaren har haft fel
förväntningar, utan mer p.g.a. stoets ålder, storlek, reslängd eller att hon
kanske skulle göra sig bättre i rasren avel. Än har jag inte helt sagt nej till
någon, men i något fall sökte både jag och stoägaren information för att
försöka veta så mycket som möjligt om eventuella risker i det specifika fallet.
Eller så har vi hittat en kompromiss på lång resa så att sto varit kvar
tills  efter 45 dygns dräktighet för att minimera risken för kastning
under hemresa. Har man en bra kommunikation brukar man kunna lösa mycket.

Det kommer säkert komma någon gång när jag och stoägaren inte kommer
överense, men då är det skönt att så många har varit så bra att ha att göra
med! Det är också lite tur att så många är trevliga och intressanta människor
då vi ofta brukar få en stund att prata när stoet anländer och bli en hel del
meddelanden till ägarna när stoet är på plats och även lite efteråt för att
följa upp hur det går.

Det sämsta; tja, ibland är det lite svårt att få ihop med familjens
önskemål om att bada, läsa godnattsaga eller äta. Det brukar ge sig, men ibland
blir det lite rörigt och ge min man extra arbete. Därför försöker jag att inte
ta emot besök när det är mattider hos oss. Och, dessutom är det tråkigt när
ägare verkligen försöker och så fungerar det bara inte, av någon anledning
brunstar inte stoet eller tar sig inte. Eller än värre – vägrar att bli
betäckt. Ännu värre blir det förstås när man försökt flera brunster, ägaren
kanske åkt långt och förhoppningen är att få fram en ersättare till stoet. Det
är inte lätt att veta varför det inte går som önskat och för det mesta går det
ju faktiskt bra – även om naturen ibland kan behöva lite hjälp.

The best thing about having stallions for breeding is that I get to meet
different horsebreeds and humans I wouldn’t have meet otherwise. I have had so
many nice people over the years and that feels great!

As most of the foals produced from visting mares are going to be
crossbreeds and the rocky is so unusual here I ask the mare owners what they
hope to get from the offspring. The answers have been plenty and there is no
right or wrong, but it feels good to check that it seems as the mare owners
have a realistic view on what they my stallions can contribute with. And in
some cases have we got to the point that it might not be the right choice.
Mostly it hasn’t been because the owner want something that isnt realistic, but
because the mare is old, there is a long way to travell, the mares size or that
she would benefit more to breed pure to her breed. And in at least one case
both me and the mare owner tried to find as much infomration as possible to see
if it could be ok. Sometimes have we dealt with it in other ways, mares that
have a long way to travel have stayed until they are 45 days pregnante and the
most dangerous period is over. With a good communication can a lot be solved.

But, most likely is there goping to be a time when the mare owner and I
disagree, so I feel happy that so many have been so good to be around! As there
usually takes some time when the mare arrives and that there are many messages
while the mare is here is it a bonus that most people are so nice to chat with.

The worst then? Well, sometimes it’s hard to get the familys wishes about bath, reading a bed time story or have dinner to work well with visting clients. Somehow, it works out, but can at times be a bit messy and put extra work on my husband. It is also a bit of a disapointment when mares don’t take – especially when the owner really have tried, have travelled a long distance and are looking for that horse to replace the mare with in the future. By some reason the mare just dont get a good heat or take – or even worse – don’t allow breeding. It’s not always easy to know why it doesn’t work, but luckily it works out most of the time, even if nature needs some help now and then.
