Sedan släpps Pepper in till stoet.

How the breeding is done at Ullekalv

One of the questions I get the most when it come to breeding is how it’s done.

A couple of years I would have one answer, but Pepper and Footy obviously have very different ideas about how it should be done so I have adjusted to their demands. One thing is the same thou; a big enough pasture so the mare have space enough and hopefully don’t feel forced.

When a mare comes to visit Pepper she let out in the pasture where they are going to meet, with her halter. Pepper is in a pasture close by. When the mare seems to have settled a bit, often within half an hour Pepper is getting into the pasture.  While we wait we fix the papers and chat for a bit. As Pepper feel a need to make an impression at the first meeting there is often a few screams and sounds from both. Within another half hour is it often ok to get the halters of. Mare with a foal might need some more time to get used to Pepper so I prefer to wait until the next day then, or if the mare seems stressed and needs more time. Everyone is special. Some mares have been introduced to Pepper within less than fifteen minutes as they only care for the grass.

If pepper have two mares simultaneously they are in one pasture each, close to each other and Pepper is changing pasture once or twice a day if both are in heat. The horse that is alone can still see Pepper and the other mare and often some of my horses as well.

I find that this method works as there is no other mares to care for, just between Pepper and the visiting mare. Mares that already know each other and arrive simultaneously has been together with Pepper, they have probably already settled all between the two of them. And if a mare would get in heat ”out of schedule” or get back Pepper can be moved to a third enclosure if necessary, even if I don’t plan for that. Two mares seems enough at once.

Footy on the other hand. I want to use the same method but he don’t like it. He has spent a lot of time in his life alone and probably that’s why he reacts as he does. After having seen the same pattern twice I had to change how he was introduced. If handled as Pepper he seems to get angry with the new mare, its her fault that he isn’t with his old mare at that moment. That new intruder stole his wife and she is going to pay for that…

So. With Footy he needs to be with his wife and the new girl introduced to the two of them.  I try to let the new mare see the pasture and meet Footy’s wife first before I let him over (he waits a bit frustrated close by). Then he can be introduced. That’s how he is content – adding more mares to his band is ok – not to take them away. When he has learned to know the new girl can I remove my mare if necessary. I prefer to keep my own mare that is covered by Footy with him and the visiting mare so I don’t have to have two visiting mares together with him. They boy prefer stability. This also makes it harder to book mares and know when we are going to have some time for one new mare.

This boy is also much more affected by the breeding season. When I finally had got him up twenty kilo and he started to get the weight I would like two of my mares, that he didn’t cover was close by and he lost thirty kilos. Even if he is on supplements. Pepper has always kept his weight up during all seasons.
