What we began with…

En av alla saker jag håller på med och som gör att det blir mindre tid på hästryggen är sadelkammaren: Mannen tycker kanske inte att sadelkammare var vare sig det roligaste eller viktigaste att bygga, men det blev upp-prioriterat eftersom alternativet var att ha sadlarna inomhus… Inte för att jag har några dyra sadlar egentligen, men eftersom grannarna sagt att det varit sadelstölder i krokarna och det finns många stall vill jag inte ta risken.

Efter ett antal diskussioner bestämde vi oss för att göra sadelkammaren en våning upp. Bilder visar nog bättre vad som skett och snart är det äntligen klart. Nu ska bara golvet läggas, golvlisterna dit lite mer isolering i golvet underifrån och så lite mera inredning… Och lampor då. Men så skönt att snart ha en sadelkammare så jag slipper ha allt under presenning och i lådor. Kan säga att jag inte hittat mycket sedan vi flyttat…

The Tack Room

First we needed a stairway, and then floor and isolated walls and a roof. Now even the door is in place!

One of the things I have been working on and that gives me less time at the horse back is the tack room. My husband might not have found this project the most important or the most fun but it got high priority as the alternative was to keep the saddles in our house…Not that I have expensive saddles, but as there have been saddles thieves in the neighbourhood and there are many stables I don’t want to take the risk.

After some discussions was it decided that the tack room became on “the second floor”. Pictures probably show better what we have done and it is soon finished. We only need to fix the inner floor, more isolation under the floor and some furnishing… And electricity. So nice to soon have a place for all that stuff that has been hidden under tarps since we moved here. Maybe I can start to find all my things?

 

Even painted the walls and got some furnishing done already even if there is more to come…

 

Nedmontering lösdrift

Flytten närmar sig allt mer. Fler och fler saker förbereds, packas och flyttas. Det tar sin tid med 8 hästar, 2 barn och ett fullt hus. Men, inte bara vårat eget bohag och hästarna ska flytta utan även lösdriften. Turligt nog byggdes den för att kunna flyttas, men det går ändå inte på någon timme att packa ihop den. Både mannen och jag bad snällt vänner och bekanta om hjälp i helgen och efter en hel helgs jobb så är den snart klar att hämtas upp med lastbil.

Sedan ska den bara resas upp igen… I samband med det är tanken att förlänga den lite så just nu är papper inne för förprövning. Men, vi har ju till vintern på att att få klart allting.

 

Moving time is getting closer. More and more things are prepared, packed of and moved. It takes some time with 8 horses, 2 kids and a house full of stuff. And it is not just that – the horse shed is also moved. Luckily we built it to be possible to move it, but it still takes time. Both me and my husband asked kindly our friends for help so after a full weekend of work it is soon ready to be loaded on a trailer.

Then we only need to build it up again…. And before doing that we have to prepare some parts to make it a little bigger. And papers needs to be ok to do all that. But it has to be ready until winter strikes.

Att planera ett stall

Jag har hela tiden haft en tanke om var nya stallet ska ligga sedan vi köpte gården och ganska snabbt fick jag en idé på hur jag trodde det bäst skulle inredas. Men, eftersom jag härrom veckan fick input av ett annat slag och andra idéer så tänkte jag passa på att höra om någon har bra argument av olika slag för olika lösningar. Eller en helt annan lösning.

Självklart måste stallet följa alla regler som finns, men tanken är egentligen inte att ha dem inne. “Till vardags” kommer de att bo i lösdrifterna. Stallet är tänkt främst om jag har sjuka hästar och vid fodring av kraftfoder och pyssel med hästarna för att vänja dem. Egentligen behöver inte alla få plats (även om det vore praktiskt när stormar som Gudrun och Per drar förbi).

Störst i stallet idag är Calinka på ca 162 cm och Rockys får inte vara mycket höre – men det vore skönt att se till att stallet kan användas av hästar upp till 180 cm. Man vet aldrig vad framtiden har i beredskap och kanske kommer jag att hyra in ett par hästar någon gång.ENligt svenska regler behövs därför följande:

 

  • Takhöjden på minst 2,7 m.
  • Största boxen på 11m2 och ingen av sidorna kortare än 3 meter för att ston upp till 170 cm föla där. Övriga boxar bör inte vara mindre än 9-10 m2 även om de gärna får vara större och mer än en box för sto med föl vore bra.
  • Stallgångar måste vara minst 2,5 meter breda.

Min initiala tanke var att använda det gamla kostallet. Det har stallkänsla men kräver mycket arbete:

  • Takhöjden är lite för låg på flera ställen och för att kunna få in boxar behöver avbäringen ändras. Taket har vi tidigare tagit bort då det inte längre bar, men bjälklaget är kvar.
  • Foderbord och krubbor måste bilas bort.
  • Gjuta om golvet på vissa platser efter bilningen.
  • Fönster behöver få galler.
  • Några av ytterväggarna behöver repareras då de satt sig/virket är murket.

Fick då tipset att använda logdelen av ladugården istället. Där finns en bred gång rakt igenom som är gjuten, i övrigt är det sandgolv. Fönster saknas, men det är högt i tak och gles panel. För bärningen av taket går det ner många stöttor i golvet, men det skulle gå att få in boxar mellan dem. Här skulle man inte använda ytterväggar utan bygga boxarna “fristående”. Troligen skulle det gå lättare, snabbare och billigare särskilt om man behåller jordgolvet. Men, så klart blir det inte lika mysigt.

Sadelkammaren kan placeras var som i byggnaden.

Med tiden vill jag ha:

  • En spolspilta
  • Bra plats för ultraljud av dräktighet på ston.
  • Minst en box som är lite avskärmad mot övriga, om än inte helt isolerad. Dels om man får in häst som inte kan stå bredvid andra eller om ett sto med nyfött föl vill ha lite lugn.

Just nu är min fundering att försöka få tag på 4 begagnade, hela boxar som man kan sätta upp i logen för att sedan långsamt bygga upp stallet i ladugårdsdelen. Men, det kanske finns någon med helt andra tankar/smarta lösningar som vi inte tänkt på ännu? Tipsa gärna om dem!

 

Planing a stable

Since we bought our new farm have I had a plan for the stable and rather fast I got a thought about how I wanted to place the stalls. But, last week someone threw a totally different idea so I thought that maybe someone had argument/thoughts for one or the other. Or a totally different idea.

Of course all rules about stables needs to be taken into account, even if my plan now only is to keep them indoors if they aren’t well and while i give them some grain or work with them just to teach them about standing in a stall. Not everyone need to have a stall (even if it would be practical when big storms hit by).

Today Calinka is my largest horse with about 1,62 meters and rockys aren’t allowed to be bigger than that but I still would like to prepare the stable so bigger horses can be stabled (up to 180 cm). You never know what the future brings and maybe I at some point have other peoples horses boarded. Therefore, according to Swedish rules:

  • The roof height needs to be at least 2,7 meters.
  • The biggest stall needs to be at least 112  with no side shorter than 3 meters to be able to keep a mare up to 170 m and her foal in there. The other stalls can be 9-10 m2 even if more space never is a bad thing and more than one stall for mare and foal would be good.
  • The aisle needs to be at least 2,5 meters wide.

My initial thought was to use the old cow stable. It has that old stable feeling but needs some work:

The roof is to low at some points and to get stalls in there effectively the construction of how the roof is supported needs to be changed.We have already removed the old roof as it was rotten, but the balks are still there.

  • The old feeding solution are made in concrete.
  • After the feeding solutions is removed the floor needs to get new concrete in at least those places.
  • The windows needs protection from horses.
  • Some of the outer walls aren’t in the best shape and needs to be changed.

In the barn. Daylight comes throw the walls. We have cleaned up the barn a lot since this picture was taken even if there still is some things to take care about. For example that metal cylinder (once used to make hay silage).

Therefore I got the tip so use the barn part of th e building instead. There is a big concrete aisle but the rest of the floor is sand. Windows are missing but the outer panel is letting daylight in and it is full height to the outer roof. There are a lot of pillars supporting the roof but there would be enough space between them to place stalls.If using the area the outer walls and pillars wouldn’t support the stalls, but the stalls would be more “stand alone”. It would probably be both faster and easier, especially if the sand floor is kept. But it is of course not as cosy.

The tack room can be anywhere in the building.

Sometime in the future i want:

  • A wash stall
  • A place to ultra sound pregnant mares.
  • A stall that is a little isolated from the others so that a horses that doesn’t do well with company close by can be there or a mare with a newborn that want some privacy.

Right now I am think about trying to find 4 used stalls and place them in the barn to have a place to bring them in and then slowly build the other part in the cow stall.But here might be other clever ideas/solutions that we haven’t thought about yet? Please tell me!
