En kul färg på en häst är just det – en kul färg. Inom Rocky Mountain rasen finns många olika färggener och därmed många olika möjligheter. Själv tycker jag att det är kul att se vilka möjligheter det finns och hur olika kombinationer ser ut. Men, om inte förr blev det väldigt tydligt för mig hur jag uppfattar färg när jag var i Kentucky. Efter att ha sett nästan bara silversvarta hästar dagarna i ända började de gulbruna se intressanta ut – för att inte tala om den bruna hästen… För mig blir alla färger till en vardag om jag ser dem tillräckligt ofta. Men det hindrar inte att det kan vara kul att se olika varianter eller klura på vilka färgkombinationer som är möjliga.
Oavsett vilket så tänkte detta bli en post om vilka möjliga färgkombinationer det kan bli från mina hästar och varför jag vet det – och vad jag inte vet. Det hela förutsätter även i vissa fall att de färger som finns registrerade i stamtavlan är korrekta. Någon gång i framtiden kommer jag att färgtesta för de gener där jag är osäker.
Pepper:
Pepper är svart som grundfärg, dvs den genetiska beteckningen aa på augoti locuset om man så vill. Därmed kan ha inte bidra till brun färg hos avkomma. Eftersom han är svart har han E på extension locuset. Däremot går det inte att säga från den informationen om han är EE eller Ee. Vad det spelar för roll? Är han EE kommer han aldrig att kunna bli far till ett ”röd” baserat föl, dvs ett med fux som grundfärg (innefattar t.ex. även isabell och rödblack). Har han däremot Ee är det möjligt, då kommer 50% av avkomman att få ett e och om det även får e från sin mor blir avkomman rödbaserad. Genom att studera Peppers stamtavla har jag sett att hans pappa har lämnat både rödbaserad och svartbaserad avkomma. Hans mamma har däremot bara lämnat svartbaserad. Enda sättet att få reda på vad han har är att gentesta honom ellerom han blir far till en rödbaserad avkomma.
Pepper har även genen för konstantskimling som brukar betecknas Rn. Han har den enbart i enkel uppsättning eftersom bara hans pappa bar på genen och den alltid syns hos den som har den.
Genuppsättning hos Pepper blir därför: E?aaRnrn
Tittar man på hans bidrag till avkomma är det därför 50% chans för konstatskimmelgenen, ingen chans för brunt om inte stoet har det och 50 eller 100% av avkomman får ett anlag att bli svartbaserad.
Bunny
Bunny är silversvart. Det betyder att hennes grundfärg är svart, dvs hon har aa på augoti locus och E på extension locuset. Hon kan därmed inte ge brun avkomma om inte hingsten bär anlaget. Bunny måste vara Ee på extension locus då henne mamma är fux. Hade hon varit ee hade hon själv varit fux och en fux kan bara ge ett e till sin avkomma. Bunny har även genen för silverfärg, betecknad Z i dessa sammanhang. Hon är inte testad för silvergenen och skulle i teorin kunna ha två silvergener, men inget tyder på det. En individ med två silvergener brukar vara mycket ljusare i tonen än vad Bunny är. Hennes pappa är silverfärgad medan mamma som sagt är fux och fux döljer silveranlag.
Alltså är Bunnys genuppsättning EeaaZ? , troligen EeaaZz
Därmed är det 50% chans att avkomman får silvergenen, och 50% chans att avkomman får ett anlag att bli svartbaserad, 50% att det får ett anlag för att bli rödbaserad.
Percy
Här finns det ett antal färganlag som påverkar. Först och främst, Percys svarta mamma är gentestad EE, alltså kan hon aldrig få ett rödbaserat föl. Därmed måste hon ge alla sina föl E och a.
Percys pappa är gentestad CrCrAA, dvs en perlino eller gulvit med två anlag för brun färg. Det ger att han alltid ger ett gulanlag till sin avkomma och ett brunanlag. Därmed kunde man, redan innan Percy föddes förutsäga att denna föräldrakombination skulle resultera i en häst med följande gener: E?AaCrcr, alltså en gulbrun häst
Frågan är hur Percys pappa ser ut på extension locuset. Tittar jag på hans avkommor finns det både röd och svartbaserad avkomma, vilket ger att pappan måste vara Ee. Alltså kan Percy också vara det, men hon kan lika gärna vara EE. Bara ett gentest kan säga vilket om hon inte får en rödbaserad avkomma.
Som bonus på detta har det visat sig att Percys pappa troligen bär på silvergenen Z. Jag har inte hört att han är testad för det, men på en så ljus häst som honom är det inte svårt att missa silver visuellt. Dessutom bär hans far på silvergenen. Med tanke på att Percy ser ut att vara silvergulbrun är det i så fall från sin pappa hon fått denna gen.
Alltså blir hennes genkombination: E?AaCrcrZz
Därmed blir det 50% chans att Percys avkommor får gulgenen, 50% chans på gen för brun färg och 50% chans att de får silvergenen. Sedan kan det vara så att hon bara kan få svartbaserad avkommor, men det kan även vara så att hon kan få fuxfärgade avommor.
Dessutom bär hon nog på sooty gen, den får hästen att bli mörkare i tonen, lite som om man hällt en hink aska över den. Sooty finns det däremot inget test för. Vi funderar även över minimal sabino genen, men där är det bara en som går att testa för och det är inte säkert att det är vad hon har. Däremot tyder formen på hennes strumpor lite på sabino.
Calinka är den enklaste hästen på många sätt. Den stora frågan är om hon är svart eller mörkbrun. jag tror på svart, men för att vara säker skulle man behöva testa henne. Troligen har hon två E, det är långt tillbaka i stamtavlan tills det kommer fuxar, men det är inte omöjligt att hon är Ee heller eftersom e kan följa med länge hos bruna och svarta hästar. Så antingen är hon E?aa eller E?A? Jag gissar på EEaa.
Horse color – my horses genetic setup
A fun color on a horse is just that – a fun color. In the Rocky Mountain breed there is alot of different color genes and therefor alot of possibilities. I like to se how it could turn out and what different combinations look like. But, if I didn’t know it before it became very clear to me how I look at colors when I visited Kentucky. After watching hundreds of silver black horses for days the buckskins looked interesting, not to mention the bay… So, I might just love a color, but the color always becomes usual when I see it every day. But that don’t hinder that it can be fun to look at and calculated color from differnt combinations.
Anyway, this is a post about my horses color possibilities and why I know those things. And what I don’t know. Sometimes this knowledge is based on the pedigree and that a correct color has been registered there. Someday I am going to do gene tests for the colors that I am not sure about today.
Pepper
Pepper has black as his base color, the genetic setup is therefore aa at augoti locus. Therefore he could never have a bay offspring if the mare isn’t carrying bay. As he is black he has E at the extension locus. But, it isn’t clear if it is EE or Ee. Does that mater? If he is EE he could never be the sire of a red based foal (chestnut but also palomino and red dun for example). If he is Ee half of his offspring is getting e and if they get e from the mother they get red based. I have studied Peppers pedigree and seen that his father has sired both red and black based offspring. That means that his father is Ee. His mother has only left black based offspring. The only way to find out about Pepper is by gene testing or if he sires a red based offspring.
Pepper also carries the gene for roan, usually written Rn. He has one copy as only his father was roan. Roan is a color that always is visible if the horse carries it.
Therefore Peppers genetic setups is: E?aaRnrn
Therefore his offsring get a 50% chans of getting the roan gene, no chans of being bay if the mare isn’t carry the gene for that and 50 or 100% chans of getting a gene to be blackbased.
Bunny
Bunny is silverblack (or chocolate). That means that her base color is black and therefore has aa at the augoti locus and E at the extension locus. Therefore she can’t have a bay foal unless the stallion carries that gene. Bunny has to be Ee at the extension locus as her mum is chestnut. Had Bunny been ee she would have been a chestnut herself, but a chestnut can only give its offspring e. Bunny also carries the gene for the silver dilution, Z. She is not tested for the color and could, in theory carry two copies, but that is not likely. An individual with two silver genes usually have a paler coat than Bunny. Her father was silver black, but as her mother was a chestnut she could have hidden a silver gene as silver isn’t visible at red based horses.Bunnys genetic setup EeaaZ? , probably EeaaZz
Therefore her offsping have a 50% chanse to get the silver gene, and a 50% chans to get a blackbased coat from its mother as well as a 50% chans of getting a red based gene.
Percy
She has a lot of possibility to play with. Her black mother is gene tested EE, and can therefore never throw a red based foal. Therefore all her offspring is going to receive E and a from her. Percy’s father is gene tested CrCrAA; a perlino that only can throw bay horses if they aren’t redbased. He is always giving his offspring one gene for bay and one for creme. Therefore, even before Percy was born the combination between those parents couldn’t be anything else than E?AaCrcr, a buckskin.
The question is how Percy’s dad extension loci. Looking in the database at his offspring he has sired both red and black based horses, therefore he needs to be Ee. That means that Percy also can be Ee, as well as EE. Only a gene test can tell if she can throw a red based foal or not. As a bonus, I might be that her dad carries the silver gene Z. I haven’t heard that he has been tested for that, but at such a light horse it isn’t hard to miss the silver color. As Percy looks as a silver buckskin, she must have gotten the gene from her dad. As her fathers father carried the silver gen it is not at all impossible.
Her gene combination is therefore: E?AaCrcrZz
That means that her offspring have a 50% chans to get the creme gene, 50% chans to get the bay gene, 50% chans to get tehe silver gene and that they might be red based as well.
Besides that she probably carries sooty, but there is now test for that. Sooty looks a bit as if a tin of ash has been poured over the horse and gives a darker tint to the color. We also think that she might be a minimal sabino as her stockings looks a bit like that. problem is that there seems to be a lot of different forms of sabino and therefore different genes and only one of them can be tested for.
Calinka
In many way, Calinka is the “simplest” horse color-wise. The only question is if she is dark brown or black. I would go for black, but to be sure she needs a genetest. She probably carry two E, as there is a far distance in her pedigree to a chestnut, but it is not impossible that she is Ee as e can be unseen for many generations in black and bay horses. So, she is either E?aa or E?A? My guess is EEaa.
