Lite träning igen

Calinka

Äntligen har jag hunnit göra något, lite med hästarna. Calinka är inte jobbad sedan i slutet av maj tror jag, men nu har hon fått ett par korta tömkörningspass.

Whizzy och Iris har fått gå varsin promenad i omgivningen. De uppförde sig perfekt! Iris fick Pepper och Thea som följde efter henne omkring 600 meter när vi gick längsmed deras bete. iris brydde sig inte så mycket och det var lätt att få tillbaka hennes fokus när hon började tappa det. Sedan såg vi en av dammarna och så tillbaka genom skogen. Whizzy fick ta samma promenad men vi började åt andra hållet så att vi inte fick med Thea och Pepper. Istället kom vi att gå över ett antal diken utan vatten och passera mellan täta granar. Båda dagarna var det väldigt blåsigt ute.

Dessutom har de fått prova på att ha bett i munnen. Vanligtvis brukar jag vänta med att introducera det, men eftersom de så gärna vill få uppgifter kan de få gå och ha bett i munnen en stund. Det innebär ju inte att vi måste börja arbeta med bett. Hoppas kunna fortsätta med lite flera småsaker framöver. Inte för att det är mycket, men det är något och eftersom jag är höggravid och nyflyttad känns det ändå ok.

 Working the horses again

Finally I have been working the horses a little. Calinka has only been in the pasture since the end of May, but now she has gotten two short long rein sessions.

Whizzy and Iris got one walk each in the neighbourhood. They did great! Iris had Pepper and Thea following her for about 600 meters at their side of the fence but Iris didn’t care very much and was easy to get to focus on me. Then we saw one of the ponds and then went into the forrest. Whizzy took the same walk, but we started in the other direction so we didn’t get so much horse company. Instead we crossed some small, non water filled ditches and passed throw tiny passages between trees. Both times was it very windy outside.

They also got to try to wear a bit. Usually I wait with that but as they wont challenges I thought that could be a good one. It doesn’t mean that we have to start to work with a bit. I hope to be able to do some other small things with my horses. Not because it is much but as we just move and I am very pregnant I think it is a good level.

Iris and I saw a gigantic anthill – the picture actually makes it look smaller than it really is.

Bits are strange things – Iris chewed and chew but finally managed to graze a little with it in her mouth.

Nästa års föl

Det är inte bara utomstående ston som har fått träffa Pepper. Förhoppningsvis får både Bunny och Percy varsin avkomma i juni/juli efter honom. Det blev relativt sen betäckning av dem i år eftersom de och han inte befunnit sig på samma ställe på grund av flytten.

Percy är även duktig på att hålla undan andra ston från att betäckas vilket gjort att Bunny inte blev betäckt när hon borde. Jag gick ner och höll i Percy varje dag – men Pepper tyckte tydligen att Percy var mer i rätt fas så då passade han på att betäcka henne istället för Bunny… Och självklart brunstade båda två (och ett utomstående sto) samtidigt.

 

Foals next year

It is not only outside mares that have been dating Pepper. Hopefully both Percy and Bunny have foals by him next June/July. They got covered rather late as they and Pepper haven’t been at the same location due to moving.

Percy is also very good at keeping other mares in the same pasture at a distance so they don’t get breed that might have prevented Bunny from being breed at all. I got there everyday and put a halter on Percy so Pepper could cover Bunny but then he chose Percy anyway… And of course both were in heat at the same time (as well as an outside mare).

Grimträning

Det är hög tid att lära fölen få på sig och ledas i grimma. Tidigare år har jag kunnat ta in dem på stall och ta på grimma, men i år är det inte möjligt. Det gör det hela lite svårare. Eddie hann ha grimma ett par gånger innan flytten och det gick ganska lätt att få på henne grimman. Ledträningen har därför börjat lite smått.

Zeb däremot är mera tveksam. Bunny har dessutom varit hjälpsam nog att flytta sig när jag haft ett bra läge att få på grimman så att Zeb med flyttat sig och blivit än mer tveksam… Så nu är det lite extra hantering och så får han vänja sig vid grimman genom att den befinner sig lite varstans på hans kropp som jag kan komma åt att placera den. Nåja, det kommer att ge sig.

Halter training

It is time to teach the foals about halters. Previous years has it been possible to bring them inside and put a halter on in the stall. But this year that isn’t an option. That makes it a little harder. Eddie got to wear the halter a couple of times before moving and wasn’t so difficult to get the halter on. So, she got to use it for a couple of days and now we have started to do som easy lead training.

Zeb on the other hand hasn’t been so keen on the idea. Bunny hasn’t been helpful either and managed to move away the first times when I nearly got the halter on… That made Zeb even more sure that it was something strange going on. Therefore I try to handle him a little extra and to put the halter wherever on his body that I can. So, he’ll learn sooner or later.

Solbränd

Bunny har rosa hud på mulen. Inte mycket, men hon har en tendens att bli solbränd där. För det mesta ser hon bara lite röd ut men i år blev det ett stort sår på bara ett par dagar. Solskyddsfaktor på och förhoppning om att det skulle bli bra. Samt en flughuva med liten flärp mot mulen. Den täckte inte allt, men borde kunna gett lite skydd. Inom mindre än 12 timmar hade Bunny däremot tagit av den – andra huvor kan få sitta men denna gillade hon tydligen inte…

Some days ago – it had nearly healed but you could still see where it had been.

Fast dag nummer tre fick jag inte fånga henne längre. I vanliga fall är det absolut inget problem, men nu fick jag inte komma henne nära. Antagligen gjorde det ont när jag smörjde in solskyddskrämen. Ett par dagar fick jag därmed jobba bara för att få komma nära henne igen och strunta i det där med att ha kräm på mulen.

Fick någonstans i detta en tanke om nosnät och grimma och lyckades på något konstigt sätt hitta nosnätet bland alla saker. (Med tanke på vilken röra allt befinner sig i efter flytten…). Det gick som tur var att fästa på grimman! Nu har hon gått med nätet ett tag och mulen har läkt riktigt fint. Nätet verkar skydda mulen riktigt bra mot solen. Antar däremot att hon behöver skyddet ytterligare eftersom det fortfarande är en hel del sol. Det verkar vara den lösning som vi båda kan komma överens om även om jag föredrar att inte ha grimma på dem i hagen.

 

 

Sunburnt

The net and halter.

Bunny has some pink skin on her nose. Not much, but she has a tendency to get sun burned there. Mostly she only get a little red but this year she got wound in just a few days.. I applied some sun block and hoped that it would be fun. Just for extra I added a fly bonnet with a part covering the nose a little as well. In less than 12 hours Bunny had got rid of the fly bonnet. She usually have no problems with fly bonnets but apparently she didn’t like this one…

Day numer three I weren’t allowed to catch her. Usually there is no problem at all but she didn’t won’t me up close. Probably it hurt when I applied the sun block. So I had to give her a few day just to let me come up and catch her.

At some point I came to think about a nose net attached to the halter and managed to find it among all things. (After moving nothing is in order…) Luckily it could be attached to the halter! Now has she been with the halter and nose net for some time and the nose is finally starting to look ok. Seems as the net shades the nose pretty well. But, as it still is sunny I guess she needs to wear it some more. I prefer not to have the halter on in the pasture but as this seems to be the solution that we both can agree on this is how we do

Riddarspel

I helgen var det dags för de årliga riddarspelen på Ekenäs – 25 år jubileum. Mina hästar tog det hela med ro. Men både Iris och Whizzy tyckte det var lite konstigt som området ändrats när vi var ute och kollade dagarna innan. Fast Iris reagerade mest på shetlandsponnyn som stod i en hage. Nyttig miljöträning för djuren och väldigt bra för mig att se hur de reagerar i den typen av miljö. Whizzy var först spänd, men slappnade av oväntat fort. Iris har varit med lite fler gånger och var initialt lugnare.

Jousting games

Last weekend was Jousting games weekend at Ekenäs. Celebrating 25 years this year.. My horses didn’t bother much. Both Iris and Whizzy found it strange that the a rea had transformed so much when we looked at it a day before the games begun. But what bothered Iris the most was the Shetland pony that she saw. Anyway it is a good training possibility and for me to see how they react in this kind of environment.Whizzy was tense at first but cooled down rather quickly. Iris has seen it once more and was more relaxed from the beginning.
