Eftersom Whizzy inte är född i Sverige behöver hon tilläggsregistreras i Sverige. Eftersom Rocky Mountain inte har någon rasförening i Sverige så registerar jag mina hos Svenska Hästavelsförbundet (SH). Det har alltid gått jättesnabbt att fixa pass och man har varit trevlig och hjälpsam. Så, jag skickade glad i hågen in Whizzys pass 30 maj efter att först ha haft ute en id-kontrollant för att konstatera att hon var hästen i passet, både utseende och chipmärkning.

 

 

För någon vecka sedan fick jag ett papperssvar från SH – de ville ha in kompletterande uppgifter: Bild på hästen för att kontrollera färgen. Jag mailade dem genast och tog med bilderna i det här inlägget samt en bild från nätet på hennes farfar MX Gabriel (publicerar inte den här eftersom jag inte frågat om tillstånd för det).

Idag fick jag ett mailsvar:

“Hej
Tack för bilderna.
Våran färgspecialist tittar på det här när hon kommer tillbaka från semestern”

Först blev jag lite less och sur, jag vill gärna ha tillbaka passet och jag var förutseende nog att inte bara skicka en bild utan ett antal för att visa på typiska champagne-egenskaper. Borde inte behövas en färgspecialist för att se det enligt mig…. Men, sedan tänkte jag att sannolikheten att de har en champagne i sina register är ganska liten. Inte konstigt om de är misstänksamma/tveksamma/okunniga då. Jag vet att det finns ett fåtal quarter eller paints med färgen i Sverige men de tillhör inte SH vad jag förstår. Och kanske är det jag som “snöat in” så på hästfärger att det är en inte helt ovanlig färg för mig. I  så fall är de säkert inte de enda som är okunniga om färgen och

det smarta vore ju att visa på vilka egenskaper som är så typiska för färgen:

1. Hon kommer från en ras där färganlaget förekommer. Champagneanlaget uppkom troligen under 1800-talet i USA’s söder och finns dokumenterad hos både Saddelbredet, kallblodet American Cream och Tennesse Walking hästen sedan 1900-talets början. Två av raserna nära släktingar till Rockyn och som bidragit mycket till rasen. Förvisso är färgen

   inte vanlig hos Rockyn, men den finns där. Hennes pappa; Champagne Troubadour härstammar från MX Gabriel som i sin tur är efter Hersheys White Chocolate, den hingst som man vet ligger bakom nästan alla champagne-färgade individer i rasen. Hershey’s White Chocolate är, vad jag läst, gentestad för champagne-genen. (Det finns ett fåtal andra, mycket ovanligare linjer med färgen med).

2. Hennes pappa har fått flera avkommor som är just champagnefärgade i olika varianter. Han är dessutom gentestad och har champagnegenen (E/E, Z Ch).
3. Hon föddes med en mörkare päls som sedan ljusnat. Annars brukar föl födas ljusa och mörkna vid första fällningen, här hos champagne är det tvärtom.
4. Huden är inte svart utan ljust grå, titta kring ögon och mule.

   Hos äldre hästar blir karakteristiskt fläckig, men av det syns inte så mycket än hos Whizzy.

5. Ögonen hos föl är blåaktiga eller gröna för att sedan bli mörkare. De blir ofta ljusbruna i slutänden.
6. Omvänd apelkastning är vanligt, istället för att få apelkastning med en mörk ring kring en ljusare mitt får de ofta en mörk mitt med ljusare kant. Det tog jag inte med till SH eftersom Whizzy än så länge inte visar det. Däremot gör hennes pappa det.
7. Whizzy är gentestad Ee rn z, dvs hon är svartbaserad (ingen föräldrarna är brun så det kan hon inte vara), hon bär inte silver och inte konstantskimmel (som hennes mamma som är Ee Z Rn gör). Inte mycket kvar att välja på då hon även är härstamningskontrollerad mot sina föräldrar.

Why Whizzy is a champagne colored horse

As Whizzy isn’t born in Sweden I am obliged to register her to. As Rocky Mountains don’t have their own registry here I use Svenska Hästavelsförbundet (SH). They have always been very fast when I ahve been getting my passports and helpful and nice to deal with. So, I sent Whizzys (dutch) passport to them after I have had a ID- controller to check that she was the horse described in the passport and that the microchip was the right one.

About a week ago I got a mail from SH that they wanted a picture of the horse to be able to determine the color. I emailed them within a day. In this post is the pictures that I sent them except for a picture of her grandsire MX Gabriel that I don’t have permit to use (so I don’t publish it here).

Today I got an email from SH:

“Hi!

Thanks for the pictures.

Our color expert is going to look at it when she returns from her vacation”

At first I got a little frustrated and angry; I want to get the passport back and had  tried to give them pictures to easily determine that she is a champagne. Not just one as requested. They shouldn’t need a color expert for that in my opinion… But then I thought again; they probably don’t have any champagne in their registry . Not that strange if they are suspicious/ lack knowledge then. I know there is a few quarters (or paints) with the color but they aren’t in SH. And maybe I am all to much into horse colors so I don’t get that it is so hard for others. Then they probably aren’t the only ones that don’t know what is special with the champagne color so I better explain that.

1. She is from a breed where the champagne gene exist. The champagne gene probably occurred at the 19-th century in southern USA and is documented in Saddelbred, the coldblood American Creme and Tennesse Walking horses since the beginning of 1900. Two of those breeds that have contributed a lot to the Rocky Mountain horse.The color isn’t common among the Rocky, but it is there. Her father; Champagne Troubadour, sired by MX Gabriel was sired by Hershey’s White Chocolate, that stallion most known to have spread the champagne color within the breed. What I have read Hershey’s White Chocolate is gene tested positive for champagne. (There is a few other lines with champagne as well within the breed.)
2. Her dad has more offspring with the champagne color and is gene tested to carry champagne (EE, Z, Ch)
3. She was born dark and then got lighter. Usually foals are born lighter and get darker at the first shedding but champagnes are the other way around.
4. The skin isn’t black but grey, look at the muzzle and around the eyes. Older horses gets a characteristic mottling but that has just started for Whizzy.
5. The foal has blue or greenish eyes at birth that then gets darker. They often end up light brown.
6. Reversed dappling is common. Instead of a dark ring with a lighter inside they get a dark middle with light outside. I didn’t send any pictures of that to SH as Whizzy don’t show this trait yet. But her sire does.
7. Whizzy is gene-tested Ee rn z,; she is a black based horse (no bay as her parents isn’t), she don’t carry silver nor roan (as her mother that is Ee Z Rn). So, I say there isn’t much else to chose from.
